Memories of The Old Plantation
On one of my first visits to Dallas from Kansas City back in the mid-70's, a friend took me to The Old Plantation. The one with the stage and red velvet curtain and the verandas/bars all around the dance floor. When the show started and "women" performed, I asked my friend why there were female performers in a gay bar and he said, "Those aren't women." I was dumbfounded! I had never seen drag in my hometown of KC!

Ah yes, standing on the ramp to the front door on a hot summer night.... and remember the little glassed in quiet booths. Surely that was one of the first and only Dallas bar/discos to do that!
ReplyDeleteI used to go to work every day at the Old Plantation on N. Harwood in downtown Dallas. I am glad you have good memories of it. I certainly do. I miss it. I miss the "time" when the world was that way.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great time to be coming OUT!
ReplyDeleteThe best times i ever had was at the Old Planation. Halloween Nights were just great.
ReplyDeleteAnd i just loved to dance there
do anyone remember a disco song that they use to play at the village station as as the the old plantation.it went something like this - blue eyes shining on the water, never gonna let you down; with a reprise that sounds something like this bom bom bom
ReplyDeleteI happened to come to Dallas in the early 80s. i was in the closet and had never been around any gay people. Let alone friends with any. I did not have a car at the time. so I decided to take the bus and discover Dallas. luckily I ended up getting off at cedar springs area, and it happened to be gay pride. the parade was happening. I came out then and there! I lived in Dallas for the next 10 years and grew to love it. I met many friends for life, most of which have long since gone. (AIDS) I spent plenty of time at the o.p. and tmc, roundup, and the springs. I loved it and miss those times. I hope that all can come away from that devastating time with the sweet and beautiful memories that i did. i miss you all.
ReplyDeleteI miss the great performances - tiger lil - candy delight and many more. They all are are locked into my memory
